About Safari Doctors
Safari Doctors is a community-driven organization dedicated to improving healthcare access for marginalized communities in Kenya, particularly in the coastal and rural regions. Through our innovative mobile medical outreach and Youth Health Ambassador (YHA) model, we provide essential health services, raise awareness, and empower local communities to take charge of their own health. Our work spans across preventive care, primary health services, and tackling health disparities.
Position Overview
The Program Officer will support the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of healthcare programs in the target communities, focusing on ensuring high-quality and sustainable services. This position will be central to the operational success of Safari Doctors’ outreach activities, particularly in managing mobile medical clinics, coordinating YHAs, and fostering partnerships to address community health needs.
Key Responsibilities
Program Planning and Coordination
Support the design and planning of health programs in line with Safari Doctors’ mission and objectives.
Coordinate the logistics and execution of mobile medical outreach, including clinic scheduling, transportation, equipment, and personnel.
Collaborate with Youth Health Ambassadors (YHAs) to identify community health needs and ensure appropriate interventions are delivered.
Ensure community-based programs are aligned with local health priorities and cultural considerations.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Assist in the development and implementation of M&E frameworks to assess program outcomes, impact, and efficiency.
Collect and analyze data from health programs, ensuring timely reporting and informed decision-making.
Conduct regular site visits to monitor program implementation and provide feedback to improve service delivery.
Compile program reports and case studies for internal documentation and donor reporting.
Community Engagement and Stakeholder Management
Establish and maintain relationships with local government authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure the program’s sustainability.
Facilitate community consultations to ensure that health programs are responsive to the needs of marginalized populations.
Train and support Youth Health Ambassadors (YHAs) helping them to develop their capacity to deliver essential health services and act as community health advocates.
Resource Mobilization and Partnerships
Assist in identifying and pursuing funding opportunities to expand program reach and impact.
Collaborate with donors, partners, and healthcare organizations to strengthen the program’s capacity and resource base.
Support in writing proposals and reports for donors, ensuring that program activities and outcomes are communicated effectively.
Capacity Building and Staff Management
Provide technical support and mentorship to field teams, including mobile clinic staff and YHAs.
Organize training sessions for staff and community volunteers to enhance their skills in health delivery, outreach strategies, and data collection.
Promote a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and community-driven development within the organization.
Qualifications and Skills
Education:
A degree in Public Health, Health Systems Management, Community Health, Social Sciences, or a related field.
Master’s degree or additional certifications in public health or program management is a plus.
Experience:
At least 3 years of experience in program management, preferably in community-based health programs, mobile clinics, or outreach services.
Experience working with marginalized communities, especially in rural or coastal Kenya, is highly desirable.
Proven experience in monitoring and evaluation, report writing, and data analysis.
Skills:
Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in both English and Kiswahili.
Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Knowledge of health systems in Kenya and familiarity with the community health worker model.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with data collection tools and M&E software is an advantage.
