Safari Doctors and World Bicycle Relief Partner to Empower Communities with Bicycles: A Story of Resilience and Compassion

We are thrilled to announce a powerful partnership between Safari Doctors and World Bicycle Relief, bringing much-needed bicycles to students, Youth Health Ambassadors (YHAs), and Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Lamu County. This initiative marks a significant step towards improving access to education, healthcare, and overall community well-being, fueled by compassion and a deep commitment to building resilient communities.

In the remote communities we serve, distances present formidable challenges. Students often embark on arduous journeys to school, and CHWs and YHAs traverse vast areas to deliver vital healthcare. These treks, often lasting hours, diminish their reach and impact their ability to effectively serve the community. But we believe in the power of resilience, the strength of community, and the transformative potential of compassion. These values are the driving force behind everything we do, the fire that keeps us awake at night, pushing us to find innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the communities we serve.

Empowering Students Through Education:

For students, these bicycles are more than just a mode of transport; they are a key to unlocking their potential. Traveling to school will be significantly faster, saving precious time – 3-5 minutes per kilometer, and even more when laden with schoolbooks. This reclaimed time translates to increased opportunities for learning, studying, and engaging in extracurricular activities. Imagine the profound impact of an extra hour each day! It's more time to focus on their education, pursue their dreams, and build a brighter future.

"Before, I had to walk for hours to school," shares Amina Ali, a student at Uziwa Primary School, Lamu West. "Now, with my bicycle, I get there much faster. I have more time to study and play with my friends. It's made a huge difference!"

Strengthening Healthcare Delivery:

These specially designed bicycles are built to withstand the harsh conditions and carry heavy loads, perfectly suited for the terrain in Lamu. For our dedicated CHWs and YHAs, these bicycles are instruments of empowerment. They are the frontline of healthcare in their communities, traveling vast distances to reach patients, conduct vital check-ups (including crucial ANC visits), and perform essential household surveys. These sturdy bicycles will dramatically reduce their travel time, enabling them to visit more patients, provide more thorough care, and cover larger areas. They can now dedicate more time to direct patient care and critical interventions, particularly in the most remote and underserved communities.

"The bicycle has been a game-changer for me," says Fauz Bunu, YHA. "I can now reach so many more families in a single day. I can provide better care, especially for pregnant mothers and newborns. It's made my work so much more efficient and fulfilling."

"This initiative is about more than just transportation," says Umra Omar, Founder of Safari Doctors. "It's about igniting hope and fostering resilience. These bicycles will empower students to pursue their education with renewed vigor, and they'll enable our CHWs and YHAs to extend their compassionate care to even more people. We aim to eventually provide a bicycle for every student who needs one, building a stronger and more resilient community, one ride at a time."

This project builds on the success of our School Health Program in 2024. Many of the student beneficiaries of this bicycle distribution were also participants in the pilot program, further amplifying the program's impact and inspiring future engagement. This is a long-term commitment. We envision this bicycle relief program growing over the years as we provide more bicycles to students who travel great distances to learn.

This inspiring initiative was recently launched with a celebratory event in Lamu on February 15th, 2025. Umra Omar met with CHWs to encourage them and distribute the first bicycles. The event also included a fun bicycle race with categories for children, women, and men, underscoring the positive and community-focused spirit of this program. We were deeply honored by the presence of community leaders and members who expressed their profound gratitude for this transformative initiative.

We are eternally grateful to World Bicycle Relief for their invaluable partnership and to our compassionate donors who make this life-changing work possible. We firmly believe that access to transportation is inextricably linked to access to education and healthcare, and we are resolutely committed to continuing this vital work, driven by compassion and a vision of resilient communities.
