A Decade of One Health in Action

This past week, Safari Doctors embarked on a momentous voyage, not just across the waters of the Lamu archipelago but also through a decade of dedication to community health. To commemorate our 10th anniversary, we set sail on a symbolic voyage aboard the Lamu, a magnificent dhow built and captained by Ali Skandar. Our devoted team and volunteers were joined by our esteemed partners from the Segal Family Foundation in this traditional vessel, which was facilitated by the Flipflopi organisation. Together, they helped us retrace the paths that initially initiated our mission.

A Holistic Approach to Community Well-being

This journey was a powerful testament to our deep-rooted commitment to One Health, a philosophy that recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. As we sailed from village to village, we witnessed firsthand how our integrated programs are making a tangible difference in the lives of marginalized communities across Lamu, Garissa, and Tana River counties.

Our voyage began in Shela village and took us to the heart of communities where our One Health approach is transforming lives. In Mkokoni, we celebrated the resilience of a cervical cancer survivor, a testament to the power of early detection and timely intervention made possible through our mobile clinics and health education programs.

In the isolated island villages of Kiwayu cha Ndani and Kiwayu cha Inje, our medical teams and Youth Health Ambassadors provided vital healthcare services, demonstrating our commitment to reaching even the most remote corners of the archipelago. In Madina, a Boni village on the mainland, we experienced the unique cultural exchange that underscores our community-driven approach.

We continued to Kiangwe, where we met Mohammed Omar, a young boy whose life was transformed by a surgery facilitated by Safari Doctors. His story embodied our dedication to providing access to specialized care, regardless of location or circumstance. Our journey then took us to Shanga Rubu and Shanga Ishakani before returning to Lamu Island, where we visited Kihobe and Manda Maweni, reinforcing our commitment to bringing healthcare to the doorstep of those in need.

Celebrating Partnerships and Gratitude

The Segal Family Foundation graciously hosted a celebratory dinner at the Majlis Hotel, a beautiful setting to express our gratitude for their unwavering support. Laughter, stories, and shared dreams for the future filled the air as we acknowledged the invaluable contributions of our partners, donors, volunteers, and the communities who have made this incredible journey possible.

Sharing Our Story

This momentous sail was not only a celebration but also an opportunity to share our story with the world. The Prime Television network featured our voyage, highlighting the impact of Safari Doctors and the importance of community-driven healthcare. A full documentary, capturing the essence of this journey and the transformative work of Safari Doctors, will be released soon.
